Which makes you wonder: will Gina Riley be able to get out from under the towering edifice of Kath & Kim? Or will the weight of her creation crush her as it falls?

It's as if in sloughing off the foxy moron, she herself will disappear.
#Riley steele life on top series
Because she has historically avoided interviews - those she does do are usually with Kath & Kim co-creator Jane Turner, or in character as Kim - and because outside of the series she leads an almost exclusively non-celebrity life, it's all but impossible to imagine her beyond the confines of Fountain Lakes. She's starring in the Australian production of Chicago, in which she plays prison matron Mama Morton.

Now, for the first time in almost a decade, Riley, who turns 48 on Wednesday, is trying to do something other than Kim. Which shows how much the gods know: over the past seven years, Kim (along with Kath) has become one of the great icons of comedy in this country, more famous than Kylie Mole, Pixie-Anne Wheatley or even Ja'mie, and approaching the international status of the doyenne herself, Dame Edna Everage. Riley is a comedian who thought she might pass out from fright doing stand-up, and Kim is her great creation: her marble Galatea, carved and brought to life despite the determined opposition of Australia's television gods. But then, Riley is not really - or not only - an actor, and Kim is not only a role. Not many actors are so closely linked to roles, even roles they've made famous. Other times, you just want to slap her and run screaming from the television. She's like an idiot savant - beyond the crop tops and the clacky mules lurks the wisdom of the ages. At times during the show, when she glares up from under her fringe in the middle of a rant about daughter Epponnee-Rae or husband Brett or the silent "h" in chardonnay, you can't help but love her. Kim - also known as Kimmy, the hornbag and the foxy moron - is many things, but low-key is not one of them. I, however, can barely see this woman, because I am hypnotised by the presence of another: Riley's Logie-winning, multi-million-dollar-earning alter ego, Kim Craig, one half of Kath & Kim, the most successful comedy show in Australian television history. She looks like a low-key, competent woman in her 40s.
